Embracing Nature: How forest therapy is supporting addiction recovery

At Arrow Health, we are committed to offering holistic, evidence-based approaches to support recovery. One of our most exciting and unique therapies is Forest Therapy. A practise that is helping transform the way our residents experience treatment.

So, what is Forest Therapy?

Originating in Japan in the 1980’s, as Shinrin-yoku (or “forest bathing”), it’s about more than just walking in nature. Forest Therapy is the intentional mindful practise of connecting with the natural environment through your senses: listening to leaves rustling in the breeze, feeling the texture of bark beneath your fingertips, inhaling the earthy scent of the forest floor, or noticing the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy. This gentler immersion encourages calm awareness, reduces stress, and supports emotional and psychological healing.

A powerful complement to traditional treatment

At our Bentinck facility, we are proud to be the only addiction treatment provider in Australia currently offering Forest Therapy. With the guidance of our facilitator, Greg, we’ve seen how this practise beautifully complements the critical work we do within our hospital setting and comprehensive inpatient behaviour change program.

For residents in the early stages of recovery, Forest Therapy provides a much needed break from the clinical environment. It creates a safe, non-threatening space for reflection, emotional regulation, and stress relief – all of which can ease withdrawal symptoms and support deeper engagement with treatment.

Benefits of Forest Therapy in recovery

Forest Therapy supports recovery on multiple levels – physical, emotional, and social. Time spent immersed in nature can reduce stress hormones like cortisol, lift mood, and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression (challenges that often accompany early recovery).

Focusing on sensory experiences in the forest cultivates mindfulness and self-awareness, helping residents notice thoughts and cravings without being overwhelmed by them. Beyond mental and emotional benefits, Forest Therapy can boost immune function, improve sleep, and foster a renewed sense of purpose of connection to something larger than oneself.

  • Stress relief: Time in nature lowers cortisol, reducing stress and supporting relapse prevention
  • Mood support: Nature immersion helps reduce anxiety and depression, fostering emotional stability
  • Mindfulness: Being present in the forest encourages observing thoughts and cravings without judgement, building healthier coping skills
  • Connection: As a shared experience Forest Therapy helps reduce the isolation that can accompany addiction, fostering community, belonging, and support among residents
  • Physical benefits: Phytoncides released by trees can boost immune health, while relaxation promotes restorative sleep
  • A sense of meaning: Engaging with the natural world can help individuals rediscover purpose and feel connected to something beyond themselves

Looking ahead

We’re incredibly excited to be developing a purpose-built Forest Therapy track on our grounds, further enhancing access to this transformative practise and therapeutic modality. This initiative reflects our commitment to not just treating addiction, but nurturing holistic wellbeing and guiding residents toward sustainable recovery.

At Arrow Health, we believe in the healing power of nature. By combining evidence-based clinical care with the restorative benefits of the natural world, we are proud to offer therapies that support both the mind and the spirit, helping residents to reconnect with themselves, each other, and the world around them.
